Bolton Abbey

Bolton Abbey is a perfect family day out in the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe. If you’re looking to escape to the great outdoors, then there’s really no where better to spend the day.

Acres of beautiful countryside and footpaths to explore, walk along the riverside and amongst the woodland.

There are some beautiful spots to stop for a picnic but also plenty of tea rooms, cafes and restaurants selling excellent local produce.

To see everything this remarkable place has to offer realistically you would need more than a day to explore it all. This is why we looked at the map and picked the bits we were most excited to see.

We had a walk by the river, the kids love throwing stones in. then enjoyed a beautiful walk up towards the Priory church and ruins. It’s great to spend a bit of time wandering around here.

Afterwards we moved on to the Stepping Stones, 60 steps running across the river offering a fun yet challenging way to get across.

At the other side you get a great view of the Priory, there’s also a little beach area and a chance to enjoy a paddle.

From here we explored the footpath through the woodland and stopped for a picnic. Our day got cut a little short due to rain, we would have liked to have walked a bit further to see the Valley of Desolation and Simon’s Seat, a beautiful waterfall. I’m sure we will return soon to do this.

The rain didn’t ruin the day as we enjoyed refreshments in one of the tea rooms and had a look in the gift shop. By this point the fresh air and miles of walking had tired us all out, we had enjoyed a fantastic day and will definitely visit again.
